Chongqing University

Chongqing University (CQU) is designated medium risk for its moderate level of defence research.

CQU is a leading Chinese research institution subordinate to the Ministry of Education. Chongqing University is home to at least two laboratories devoted to defence research on nanotechnology and control systems. An institution accredited to conduct classified research, Chongqing University is active in improving its security culture with respect to the safeguarding of official secrets.

In December 2016, the Ministry of Education entered an agreement with defence industry agency SASTIND to advance military-civil fusion at Chongqing University. Following this agreement, Chongqing University established the defence-focused Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Complex Systems Safety and Autonomous Control, which works on control systems engineering in May 2018.

Designated defence research areas

Chongqing University only has one designated discipline with defence characteristics, communication and information systems.

Defence and security links

Chongqing University has exchanges with China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the country’s leading manufacturer of long-range missiles and satellites.

In April 2019, officials from Chongqing University organised a conference on the protection of classified information for military and defence projects. Around 200 personnel attended the conference, including security officials from the university’s party committee as well as cadres from the Leading Small Group on Secrecy Work. Other attendees included researchers and post-graduate students from Chongqing University’s defence laboratories.

The Academic Committee of the Defense Key Disciplines Lab of Novel Micro-nano Devices and System Technology held its first meeting on 12 May 2012. This may indicate that the laboratory was established in either in late 2011 or in early 2012. According to a recent application guide, the laboratory accepts students working on biochemical microsystems, micro-energy devices and systems along with new kinds of micro-nano devices.

Noteworthy international collaborations

In 2016, CQU signed a cooperation and exchange agreement with Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.
