East China University of Technology (ECUT) is designated high risk for its close relationship with China’s nuclear industry and high level of defence research.
ECUT was founded in 1956 as the first institution of higher education for China’s nuclear industry. Since 2001, it has been subject to four ‘joint construction’ agreements between the Jiangxi Provincial Government and defence industry agency SASTIND or its predecessor COSTIND.https://web.archive.org/web/20190808060924/http://www.jxedu.gov.cn/info/1013/65606.htm ; https://web.archive.org/web/20160713171521/http://jx.ifeng.com/a/20160712/4749936_0.shtml These agreements are designed to develop the university’s involvement in defense-related research and training. The Ministry of Natural Resources and defence conglomerate China National Nuclear Corporation are also involved in supervising and supporting ECUT.https://web.archive.org/web/20190804221724/http://www.ecit.edu.cn/2347/list.htm
ECUT carries out defence research related to nuclear science and hosts a defence laboratory on radioactive geology.http://archive.fo/rkYPV It holds secret-level security credentials, allowing it to participate in classified defence technology projects.https://web.archive.org/web/20190804223115/http://edu.jxnews.com.cn/system/2017/11/14/016566778.shtml In 2006, the East China University of Technology National Defence Technology Institute (东华理工大学国防科技学院) was established.https://web.archive.org/web/20190808060924/http://www.jxedu.gov.cn/info/1013/65606.htm

Designated defence research areas
ECUT has five designated ‘disciplines with national defence characteristics’:
- Nuclear technology and applications
- Nuclear fuel cycle and material
- Radiation protection and environmental protection
- Nuclear safety and nuclear emergency technology
- Radiochemistryhttps://web.archive.org/web/20181105023256/http://zsb.ecut.edu.cn/d7/71/c976a55153/page.htm
ECUT also has one ‘short-supply defence subject’, radiation protection and nuclear safety; and one ‘national defence key development subject’, resource exploration engineering.https://web.archive.org/web/20181105023256/http://zsb.ecut.edu.cn/d7/71/c976a55153/page.htm
Surveying engineering, environmental engineering, applied chemistry and materials science have also been described as areas of defence research at ECUT.http://archive.ph/2019.11.16-094519/http://xhx-jygh.com/web/SchoolXQ.aspx?p=196#selection-1071.0-1071.96
Defence and security links
The university’s Nuclear Science and Engineering Institute was established in 2001 in order to meet the needs of the development of China’s national defense nuclear industry. The institute is important for the cultivation of nuclear fuel cycle talent and for integrating nuclear disciplines into the university’s curriculum and research.https://web.archive.org/web/20190804232531/http://snse.ecut.edu.cn/207/list.htm The university serves as a training base for China National Nuclear Corporation personnel. https://web.archive.org/web/20190804221724/http://www.ecit.edu.cn/2347/list.htm
Noteworthy international collaborations
East China University of Technology partners with the Dublin Institute of Technology for a joint degree program in electronic information engineering. It also partners with the Athlone Institute of Technology in the joint degree program in software engineering and mechanical engineering.https://web.archive.org/web/20190807023039/http://is.ecut.edu.cn/20/68/c991a8296/page.htm
