Guilin University of Electronic Science and Technology

Guilin University of Electronic Technology (GUET) is designated medium risk for its moderate level of defence research.

GUET specialises in electronics, communications and computer science. It engages in growing levels of defence research, indicated by the decision to place it under the joint administration of the defence industry agency SASTIND and the Guangxi Provincial Government in 2018.

The PLA describes GUET as ‘Guangxi Province’s only university to have long carried out defence research.’ Areas of defence research at the university include communications technology, materials science, signals processing, microwaves, satellite navigation, and command and control. Since 2007, the university has held secret-level security credentials, enabling it to participate in classified weapons and defence technology projects. ; ;

Major defence laboratories

No laboratories at GUET are known to be dedicated to defence research. However, SASTIND seeks to establish defence laboratories in universities such as GUET that it oversees. The university’s Key Laboratory of Cognitive Radio and Information Processing, Ministry of Education (认知无线电与信息处理省部共建教育部重点实验室) carries out some defence research.

Noteworthy international collaborations

GUET runs exchange programs with a number of universities across the United Kingdom and Ireland. This includes agreements to work on electronic information and communications engineering with institutions such as Coventry University, De Montfort University, and Staffordshire University in the United Kingdom as well as the University College Cork and the Institute of Technology Carlow in Ireland.
