Lanzhou University of Technology


Lanzhou University of Technology (LUT) is designated medium risk for its growing involvement in defence research.

LUT is a university specialising in science and engineering. It holds secret-level secrecy credentials that allows it to undertake classified military research.

Agreements in 2015 and 2017 placed the university under the joint supervision of the Gansu Provincial Government, MIIT, SASTIND and the Ministry of Education as part of efforts to increase its involvement in defence research. Under the joint construction arrangement, SASTIND agreed guide and support the university’s defence research, development of defence disciplines, construction of defence laboratories, and cooperation with defence industry. ;

Since 2016, SASTIND has designated four defence disciplines at LUT including ship propulsion, control theory and materials science.

Defence and security links

LUT has carried out scientific research cooperation with more than ten military units including China National Nuclear Corporation, China Academy of Space Technology and China Institute of Atomic Energy. The university has also participated in over 20 military research projects, solving a series of weapons-related key technical issues.

Noteworthy international collaborations

LUT has collaboration, joint degree and exchange arrangements with universities in countries such as the US, UK, Russia, Germany, Japan, Ukraine, and Australia.
